The Urban Monk Inside Us
The Inner Voice in Chaos
Have you ever felt the voice of an inner void while traveling in a train or during the commute to the office in the chaos of your daily routine?
A voice that continuously remains within us and asks you to dive deep into it — like a para-diver plunging into the ocean to feel the immense silence hidden in this chaotic world.
This may be the monk inside you, asking you to be still and feel the silence between the thoughts of doing this and that, of always trying to achieve something in the future.
This monk continuously calls us to live in the present, but we keep trying to escape and live somewhere in the future.
When Life Speaks Through Silence
When it rains, we keep running under the shed of an umbrella as if we must reach somewhere.
Yet, when we are tired, the same monk asks us to sit idle, lose ourselves in nature, or disappear into the mountains.
We all have such inner voices, right?
Listening to the Monk Within
I would suggest listening to the voice of the monk inside you — to sometimes just stop and be playful with your kids, to walk or dance when it rains, to feel the hug of God when the wind touches your skin.
Feel how cold the touch of God can be in the summer, and how much warmth it can give you in the winter.
Who is a Monk, Truly?
A monk is not someone who has left all material pleasures, but someone who is still a monk from within — even after achieving the comforts of life.
Someone still filled with gratitude toward the energy, the creator, or even this Universe, which has given us the ability to understand the silence within and to embrace it.
That silence of the voice always remains with you, through all the ups and downs, and never leaves you alone.
The Stillness That Heals
Maybe this monk could give you the stillness to understand the depth of life and how precious it truly is.
Maybe it could bring peace, where no conflict remains. And when you realize you are no longer fighting with conflicts, you will soon recognize this monk and try to meet him.
This monk will guide you when you face anger, desires, happiness, sadness, or any emotion that pulls you away from stillness.
It will remind you that you can become one with the energy by simply having a witnessing attitude towards the ups and downs, freeing yourself from reactions.
Yes, monks do not react — they are simply aware of the circumstances and do not get stuck in the cycle of action and reaction.
The Way of Lightness
This monk would be so smooth that he could run on water, and so light that he could fly in the sky.
This monk does not earn to accumulate, but embraces minimalism to live in the search for stillness.
Would you be the monk of yourself?
Historical Reminders of Impermanence
History itself reminds us of the monk within. Even the greatest rulers, who once held vast empires, realized at the end that nothing truly belonged to them.
Aurangzeb: "I came alone and I go as a stranger. I do not know who I am, nor what I have been doing. The life I have spent is valueless… No empire, no wealth, no strength will follow me in my grave."
And Alexander the Great is said to have requested that his coffin be carried by physicians, his path to the grave be lined with treasures, and his hands left outside the coffin — reminders that we leave empty-handed.
Final Reflection
Both these voices — one of power, one of conquest — echo the same truth. The only real treasure is the stillness within, the monk who teaches us to live in the present, untouched by wealth or fear.
So, have you found the monk within you, or are you still searching for him?
